# Register a patient at the counter

> Give a new patient an HPN at the pharmacy counter.

## Before you start

You need the role `pharmacist`, and the patient present.

  Ask first whether the patient already has PHB. If they do, don't register them again. If you find **This phone is already registered on PHB.**, stop and go to **Dispense** instead.

## Steps

  <Step title="Open Register">
    Click the **Register** tab, then **Register a patient**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Their details">
    **First name**, **Surname**, sex, **Date of birth (estimate ok)**, **Language**, **State** and LGA. An estimated age is fine. Date of birth never blocks care.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Identity">
    Choose **Yes · phone with them**: click **Send code** and type the code the patient reads back. Or choose **No phone · provisional** and pick a reason: **No phone today**, **Phone broken / dead**, **Unconscious** or **Refused**.

  <Step title="NDPR consent">
    Read the consent to the patient and confirm.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create">
    Click **Create record · issue HPN**. You see **Registered** and the HPN. Click **Copy HPN** or **Print HPN slip**.
  </Step>

A provisional record shows its limits: **No HMO claims · no cross-hospital sharing · no app login**. The patient can upgrade later at a desk.

## Common problems

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| **That code is incorrect.** | Ask the patient to read it again, or click **Resend**. |
| **This phone is already registered on PHB.** | The patient already has PHB. Don't create a second record. |
