# Family and dependents

> Add your child to manage their care, or invite an adult relative who controls their own consent.

## Before you start

You need to be signed in. Open **Family** (`/family`).

## Steps

    Tap **Add a family member** (`/family/add`).

  <Step title="Choose the relationship">
    Under **Relationship**, pick one, such as **Your son or daughter**, **Your mother or father**, **Your brother or sister**, **Your husband or wife**, **Someone in your care** or **Another relative**.

  <Step title="Enter the year of birth">
    PHB uses the age to decide what happens next:

    * **Under 18:** **You manage their care.** They get their own HPN, linked to you.
    * **18 or over:** **Adults control their own consent.** You send them an invite instead.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Their details">
    For a child: **First name**, **Last name**, sex, and optionally **Blood group** and **Their NIN**. Tap **Add to family**.
    For an adult: tap **Invite this adult** and choose **By phone** or **By email**.

## What you can do here

* See your dependents' records.
* Add allergies for a child you manage.
* Book for a child. Bookings for a dependent are paid at the desk.
* Approve a clinician's access request on your child's behalf.
* See and revoke consents you made for them.
* Approve or decline an invite another family member sent you.

## When a child turns 18

Before their 18th birthday you get a warning. On the day, they take over their own record. Your access drops to view-only, and consents you made for them end.

## Common problems

| Problem | What to do |
| - | - |
| You added an adult but can't see their record | That's expected. An adult decides for themselves. They must accept your invite and choose what to share. |
| Your dependent's record is provisional | Verify their NIN from their family page when NIN checks are available. |
