# Bed board and admissions

> See bed occupancy across your wards and manage the queue of patients waiting for a bed.

## Before you start

You need one of these roles: `owner`, `admin`, `medical_director`, `clinician` or `nurse`. Your wards and beds must be set up first. See [Departments, wards and beds](/guides/hospital-admin/departments-wards-and-beds).

## Steps

### See bed occupancy

  <Step title="Open the bed board">
    In the sidebar, under Operations, click **Bed occupancy**. This opens `/hospital/operations/beds`.

  <Step title="Pick a ward">
    Choose a ward, or **All wards**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the board">
    Each bed is **Occupied**, **Available**, **Reserved**, **Cleaning** or **Out of service**. An occupied bed shows the patient's name, age and sex, day of stay and service. Diagnoses are never shown on the board.

### The admission queue

  <Step title="Open the queue">
    Under Operations, click **Admission queue**. This opens `/hospital/operations/admit`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the queue">
    Each row shows the **Patient**, **Ward type needed**, **Requesting doctor**, **Urgency** and how long they have been **Waiting**. Emergencies are pinned to the top.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Act on a request">
    A doctor clicks **Assign bed**, chooses a bed, adds a **Working diagnosis** and **Acuity**, and clicks **Assign bed & admit**. Anyone allowed can **Skip** or **Cancel** a request.

<Note>
  Only doctors (role `clinician`) can assign a bed. Owners, admins and nurses can see the queue, but **Assign bed** is refused for them.

## What you can do here

* See live bed occupancy by ward.
* Follow who is waiting for a bed.
* Open an occupied bed to see the patient's observations chart, if you have access.

## Common problems

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| **No beds yet** | Add wards and beds in **Configuration → Departments & wards**. |
| **You can't open the bed board** | Your role doesn't include Operations. |
| **No available** beds of that type | Free a bed, or choose another ward type. |
