# Find a patient

> Look up a patient by their full HPN and see whether you have access to their record.

## Before you start

You need a verified MDCN licence, and the patient's full HPN.

## Steps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Patients">
    Click **Patients** in the sidebar (`/clinical/patients`). Or press ⌘K (Ctrl+K).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Type the full HPN">
    Type all 12 digits. The dashes are added for you.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the access badge">
    The result shows your access to this patient:

    * **Under consent**: the patient gave you access.
    * **Treatment basis**: limited access for this visit.
    * **Emergency override**: full access in an emergency.
    * **Self-access**: it's your own record.
    * No badge: you have no access yet. You see only that the patient exists.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the record or get access">
    If you have access, open the record. If not, see [Getting access to a record](/guides/doctor/getting-access-to-a-record).
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What you can do here

* Find any PHB patient by full HPN.
* See your access status before you open anything.

<Note>
  Search by name or phone is not available yet. It shows as pending. Ask the patient for their HPN, or ask the front desk.
</Note>

## Common problems

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| Patient not found | Check the digits. PHB rejects HPNs with a wrong check digit. |
| No details shown | You have no access yet. Ask for consent or open a treatment basis. |
