# Registration fee

> Collect the fee that opens a patient's file at your hospital.

When a patient registers your hospital as their **primary hospital**, or transfers in, a registration fee may be due. Collecting it opens their file.

## Before you start

You need the role `cashier` (or `finance`, `owner` or `admin`).

## Steps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Cashier window">
    Go to `/hospital/billing/cashier`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the patient">
    Look under **Registration fees · cash awaiting**. Each row says **New registration** or **Transfer in**, and the **Cash due**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Collect">
    Take the payment and click **Collect cash**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Done">
    You see **Registration fee collected — the file is now active.**
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Where these fees come from

* A patient registers at your hospital from the patient app.
* The Care Line opens a file for a caller at your hospital. The caller pays at the facility.
* The front desk records it during registration, if your facility takes payments at reception.

## Common problems

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| **Registration fee already settled** | It was paid already. Nothing to collect. |
| The patient isn't in the list | Ask if they paid online, or check with the front desk. |
