# Inpatient care

> Who can admit, transfer, discharge and chart, and how handover differs from medication charting.

## Who can do what

* **A clinician admits.** To admit, transfer or discharge, you must hold `clinician` at that facility, and have access to the patient's record (consent or a treatment basis).
* **A nurse charts.** Nurses see the board and add fluid-balance entries. They cannot assign a bed. If a nurse tries, PHB refuses.
* **Owners and admins manage beds.** Holding `owner` or `admin` alone does not let you admit.

The steps are in [Bed board and admissions](/guides/hospital-admin/bed-board-and-admissions), [Departments, wards and beds](/guides/hospital-admin/departments-wards-and-beds) and [Ward board](/guides/nurse/ward-board).

## Handover and medication charting

A nurse writes an SBAR handover at the end of a shift (**Handover**). It is a shift handover, not tied to a bed transfer. The medication administration record (MAR) is [not built](/reference/feature-status).
