# Sessions and timeouts

> Why PHB signs you out, what the lock screen means, and what happens to unsaved work.

PHB holds health records, so it doesn't keep you signed in forever.

## What happens

| You see | What it means | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| The patient app locks after you stop using it | Patient sessions lock after a short idle time, set by PHB. | Sign in again. |
| A **Sign in again** overlay | Your session ended. | Sign in. PHB takes you back to the page you were on. |
| You are sent to a sign-in page | Your session ended and you opened a new page. | Sign in again at your usual address. |

## Your unsaved work

* Some forms keep a draft on this device while you work, such as desk registration.
* When you sign out, drafts on the device are cleared.
* Notes in an open encounter save automatically as you type.

## Signing out

Sign out when you leave a shared computer. On the patient app, signing out also signs out any staff session on the same browser.

## Common problems

| Problem | What to do |
| - | - |
| A lab scientist is sent to the **patient** sign-in page after a timeout | This is a known issue. Go to your own sign-in address instead: `/lab/login`. |
| A nurse on **Triage** is sent to the patient sign-in page | Same known issue. Go to `/hospital/login`. |
